Film

My favourite place to hang out in Nottingham city is Broadway Media Centre. I’ve managed to combine work and play by inveigling my way into their Introductions programme from time to time.
On 18 May 2017, I gave a brief introduction to The Journey, a fictionalisation of the beginnings of friendship between Martin McGuinness and Ian Paisley (Ireland, dir . N. Hamm).

In 2016, I gave a brief introduction to Brooklyn (Ireland; dir. John Crowley), Room (Ireland, dir. Lenny Abrahamson), and, on Patrick’s Day, to John Ford’s The Quiet Man (1952). I loved them all, and surprised myself by finding Ford’s iconic work worth repeated viewing. It was interesting to see how many Irish films tackle themes of oppression, sacrifice, and liberation.
